Looking In Your Dog’s Eyes Forms Brain Connections

When social species interact, brain connections naturally happen. There is “neural coupling” as the brains synchronize, and those connections strengthen when we look into each other’s eyes. In a world where people are increasingly looking at devices and chatting with AI rather than each other, could that be part of why it feels like everyone is at odds with one another lately? It’s possible, but it’s lovely to know that our brains also connect with companion animals, too.

A new study shared by Phys.org confirms that our brains connect with our dogs when we look in their eyes. The study in China found that neural coupling happens when people look in a beagle’s eyes. It was previously unknown that this happens between different species. Until now, scientists only knew that members of the same species do this, from mice to bats to primates to humans.

It’s long been known that therapy dogs provide real stress relief for people. Possibly, part of the reason might be due to this previously unknown neural synching?

Brain Connections Form Between Dogs and Humans

Using non-invasive wireless headgear that measures neural signals (EEG), the researchers studied people and dogs. When people petted and looked at the beagle’s eyes, the results showed strong neural coupling that matched in both species.

“We demonstrated for the first time that directed interbrain neural coupling occurs between humans and dogs, particularly in the frontal and parietal regions, both of which are associated with joint attention,” the study states.

By examining the EEGs, they determined that the areas of the brain which synch up are associated with attention.

As another part of the study, the researchers tested dogs that have a mutation causing impaired ability in these same brain areas. In those dogs, the connections didn’t develop the same, as these dogs showed reduced attention when looking at the human participants. However, the researchers confirmed they could restore or “rescue” this ability after one dose of the psychedelic LSD. Thus, there are implications that such treatments could help those with social impairment.

What About Connecting with Cats and Other Animals?

Although the study introduction implies that dogs are exceptional companions compared to other animals like cats, it admits that “the neural mechanisms underlying the distinctive and effective communication between humans and dogs are largely unknown.” So maybe a similar study with cats and other animals might show similar brain interspecies brain coupling in the future? Although some cats may find eye contact threatening, they communicate with us in many ways, such as meowing only for humans.

When you look in a cat’s eyes, do you doubt that you can synch up with them the same way? It seems probable that future studies will confirm as much.

Reconnecting with All of Nature

Going further, would it be surprising to find out that our brains can synch up with many other animals? Or, even all of nature? Well, consider that our brain and hearts synchronize with the Schumann resonance, the electromagnetic frequency of Earth’s ionosphere. Considering that, is it possible that we can naturally “synch up” with much of the natural world? For one example, during the pandemic, millions of folks found reconnecting with nature’s frequencies was the best kind of therapy. Certainly, the healing power of nature is well-established. And there are theories that the Earth is actually operating as one big planetary intelligence.

“Changes in geomagnetic conditions have been shown to affect the rhythms produced by the brain and heart and that human autonomic nervous system activity reflected in heart rate variability (HRV) over longer time periods can synchronize to changes in the amplitude of resonant frequencies produced by geomagnetic field-line and Schumann resonances,” a 2021 study found.
